Once again Malorie Blackman has not failed to impress. I would suggest this for someone who is into dystopian fiction.

I don't know how to rate this book I personally thought it was silly, and the writing was not to my taste. But I think another reader (a reader of the right age, romantic, and longing to meet a really competent female protagonist) might truly love it. And there was a lot to like about the details--there were a bazillion little references to get, some great plot twists, uncompromising but understated politics, and (of course) lots of sweaty teenaged lust. I liked the end, too. In fact, I wanted to cheer for the author. Getting all that Shakespeare and racial allegory into a book for teens, and then making it just as fluffy as anyone could possibly want, is an accomplishment in itself. In my mind I could hear someone arguing that not every book that mentions race has to be dead serious; that we need silly books too; that getting to write a silly book, if that's where your heart is, should not be a privilege reserved for the hegemony . . . and I found myself nodding along. So if hot YA space opera is your thing, read this book and enjoy it to the hilt. If you're looking for a deep take on Shakespeare, or deep anything really, look elsewhere.
