I loved it so much and I wish there were more books in the series.

Refuge is the second book in the Relentless series by Karen Lynch and let me tell you Refuge was just as good as the first book. The writing was amazing the plot fantastic and the characters were lovable.

So we pick up only about a week after the last book and Sara is in a Mohiri stronghold trying to adjust to her new life. Sara is one of my favorite characters because even though she is young she has been through some pretty-horrible things and survived, she is older than her years and cares for people and creatures unconditionally. She is strong, takes her life into her own hands, is fiercely loyal to the people she cares about and will not turn away from challenging things. In Refuge Sara has a lot to deal with including the fact that her powers are growing and her growing feelings for a certain Mohiri (talking about you Nikolas). I love Nikolas and he is just as stormy and completely sexy as he ever was. Now he and Sara are getting closer and I love seeing the dynamic that goes on between the two while they are trying to figure everything out.

New people, New people. We get introduced to several new characters including Sara's Mohiri family. That's right we meet them and I totally guessed it. I love the relationship that Sara forms with them and I love seeing them interact with each other, especially since Sara has been pretty guarded her whole life and didn't use to show her emotions to well. Love her relatives and I can't wait to see more about them. Also there are other trainees around Sara's age and my favorite of the group is Jordan. Jordan is just so badass and a smartass, read the book and you will love her too. Then there is Sahir who helps take care of the animals they have on base, so of course him a Sara will be come close because if it is one thing we know Sara cannot resit animals.

As for everything else you will just have to read it to find out and trust me you will want to read this book.

Overall:
Refuge has action of course (Sara is a disaster magnet), romance (hello Nikolas), new family members and friends to meet, fantastical creatures, new powers to explore, shocking surprises and a betrayal so deep who know if anyone will be able to get over it. Then there is the ending, it will leave you begging for Rogue, the third book in the Relentless series and I cannot wait to see what Sara does next.

If Sara thought leaving Maine to move to the Idaho Mohiri compound was going to keep her family and friends safe and dissuade more excitement ('disaster,' as Nikolas would say) in her life, she was blissfully naive about her "Refuge." The beginning of the story settles us nicely into Mohiri life and we learn, as Sara does, a lot about her heritage on both sides of her family, smoothly transitioning from the cliffhanger of book 1 that left so many questions. But with every answer, new questions and situations arise with new friends, new family, new creatures, new powers, and new emotions and responsibilities for Sara. I'm pretty sure I looked like a hale witch had control of my mind while reading as I laughed, cried, swooned, sighed, panicked, yelled, and gloated all within the 1 day that I sped through the book, glued to Karen Lynch's gripping writing (both times I read it). Sara definitely has to grow up quite a bit in this story and learn how to better fend for herself (because, let's face it, she was you-go-girl independent, but a poor fighter in Relentless) while concurrently growing to accept the help and support of others. I actually marked quite a few beautifully phrased lines as life lessons I should heed myself. Refuge is a great sequel, almost better than the first, once again full of creative supernatural ideas, strong emotions, fascinating characters, and nail-biting action. Cannot wait for the 3rd and final book, Rogue! This is definitely one of my all-time favorite book series!
I thought the first book was fun and entertaining, with some slight elements that bothered me. Mostly, it was Sara's all-boys-love-me, all-girls-hate-me Mary-Sueness that annoyed, but I could put it aside for the overarching story.

Well, book two takes everything I didn't like about book one, every Mary-Sue trope imaginable, and just ramps it up to 11. I haven't cringed this hard since I was reading fanfiction in my teens. ***Spoilers*** I mean, of course she not only miraculously tames hellhounds, she also has selkies and griffins and dragons who love her and worship her and she's just the first person ever to be accepted by these creatures and everyone is amazed and impressed. Of course she's the only one who befriends and heals the poor, bitter, cursed warrior who everyone stays away from. Of course he becomes her gay best friend. Of course, everyone in the world is interested in her love-life, every woman in the world wants the man SHE is fated to, and of course there is an absolutely gorgeous but super bitchy ex to make the heroine feel insecure but who will ultimately be rejected and publicly humiliated because all pretty girls are petty and jealous, don't you know.

Sara's meant to be in training but masters everything in less than a day. She defeats every monster that's sent her way without even having to know how she's doing it. She's just THAT amazing.

In the end I couldn't even finish reading the book. My advice is to read the first one if you want a light, self-contained story about a girl getting into demon-related hijinks. Don't continue the series if you are a discerning reader, because it won't get better than that. I don't normally write reviews, but I wish there had been someone with my taste to warn me away from wasting the $6.
